Diy reamp box6/7/2023 I wonder if a very clean & transformerless preamp like an FMR RNP would be a better choice for the DI track?Īlso good to know that reamping will never sound exactly the same as going straight in, makes sense and sets reasonable expectations. Although I'm pretty sure the mic input also goes through the same input transformer so I'm not sure it matters? I think I could actually take the signal from the insert jack and bypass the output transformer, that might be worth a try. One of my considerations for looking at a signal splitter rather than a DI was not "wasting" the hi-z 1/4" direct input on my Great River preamp b/c the hi-z input goes through the input transformer. Interesting to know that transformer color/saturation may not always be desirable on a direct signal intended for reamping, that's a great point. Thanks again for all the input, very informative! But if you monitor using the Thru rather than through your recorder when recording, then you give up that consistency. One can expect very consistent sound with reampers. Similar? Yes, provided the volume is in the same ballpark. If you use the Thru, then yes, you can expect the sound will not be the same on playback. There's no perfect solution but that is what I do to get identical sound on playback. I have multiple DIs, pres and reampers so I can modify that coloration if something isn't quite working. It can sometimes be considered desirable coloration like how people use tubes and transformers in mic pres - or even tube guitar amps. What amp is giving you issues?Ĭertainly, monitoring through the DI, pre and reamper changes the sound some. Perhaps using the thru on the DI is the main source of the ground loop issue you are having? The reason I mentioned this is so that people new to reamping (such as the OP) don't think squealing and noise is common and to describe the way to connect which can minimize noise and ground loops. 'Normal' for me is issue-free performance and the amps'/tubes self-noise is typically the biggest source of noise in a guitar rig. I have several amps and reampers in use - many with master volumes. Just pointing out that the noise/squeal you experience just doesn't happen in my setup. I wasn't trying to say you haven't had the issues you said you had or anything like that. Ground and noise issues can be hard to track down.
